PIRKANMAA MUOTOILEE VII EXHIBITION
Pirkanmaa muotoilee VII joint exhibition consists of two exhibitions: Wool Works and Kosken kupeessa, which were shown in Tampere, Finland at the renown and former textile factory area, Finlayson area on March 15 – April 4, 2020. The Finlayson factory area also celebrates its 200th anniversary this year and Vooninkisali being one of the oldest factory spaces in the area offered a beautiful and well-suited space for the exhibitions. The curated exhibition displays new ideas and makers / artists who gladly take up new materials and techniques. Some 20 members of Modus Design & Craft and nine members of Welsh Makers and Practitioners (MaP) exhibited their work.
WOOL WORKS EXHIBITION
The theme of the exhibition ‘Wool Works’, for which the participants created new work, embraces links between the cultural heritages of both countries and to encourage participation from the public and raise awareness of the applied arts and design in both Wales and Finland. MaP and Modus Design & Craft collaborated to put together this show of new glass, jewellery, textiles and mixed media work.
In October 2019 Craft Magazine highlighted the Wool Works exhibition as one of the most interesting and best craft exhibitions to visit in the UK. The exhibition has toured from Wales to Helsinki to Tampere. The first time the exhibition was shown in Cardiff, in the Craft in the Bay Gallery, from September to November 2019, from where it landed in Helsinki to the Craft Corner Gallery in January-February 2020.
Niina Hiltunen exhibited two works of art: Hinging on Water (2017) and Wel(l,)come (2019). Hinging on Water is an acoustic art textile and Wel(l,)come is a hanging art textile, creating spaces. Both her works are essentially three-dimensional, a feature often occurring in her works. If you wish to read more detailed background information on the works and the sources of inspiration, please browse through the online catalogue of the exhibition (in English) or visit the Facebook page of the exhibition.
